The hydrophobic nanocelluloses is designed and prepared for bioplastic packaging. It is insoluble to water and soluble to organic solvents such as acetone, chloroform, and toluene and shows molten state between 180-200 C wihout decomposition. While it shows strong mechanical strength, it forms clear and white thin films depending on casting methods, suggesting it is a liquid crystalline material. Based on thermal stability and mechnical stability, it would be suitable for polymer processing.

MEC_Y1000 is odorless, white to offwhite solids soluble to organic solvents and insoluble to water. Due to increased hydrophobicity. it shows enhanced water vapor barrier properties and is adhesive to plastic surfaces. MEC_Y1000 melts at 135-145 C and decomposes over 190 C.
