Hydrophobic Nanocellulose (MEC)

The hydrophobic nanocelluloses is designed and prepared for bioplastic packaging.  It is insoluble to water and soluble to organic solvents such as acetone, chloroform, and toluene and shows molten state between 180-200 C wihout decomposition.  While it shows strong mechanical strength, it forms clear and white thin films depending on casting methods, suggesting it is a liquid crystalline material.  Based on thermal stability and mechnical stability, it would be suitable for polymer processing.

Kinematic viscosity calibrated with water (1 cSt at 25 C)

1.60 cSt for 2.5% ethanol solution

1.90 cSt for 5.0% ethanol solution

2.56 cSt for 10.0% ethanol solution

Mechanical Strength, MPa

Polyethylenen (800), EC (864, lit) < MEC(~1200) < Poly(propylene) (>1500)

Applications: waterproof coating of paper, fabrics, and plastics for bioplastic packaging

MEC_T1000: Modified MEC adduct

MEC_T1000 is soouble to organic solvents such as ethanol and acetone and insoluble to water. It melts around 140-150 C and slowly changes to yellow over 190C. Due to the presence of ingredients, it shows antioxidant and antimicrobial acitvity.

Mechanical strength: less than MEC
